At midseason, many players have had breakout seasons, while others have been underwhelming. Last week we focused on team results. Now we take a look at player awards.
NFL MVP
Alex Smith is an incredible leader who has yet to throw an interception. He has a 115.4 passer rating. This guy has always been good, but he is by far the best player in the NFL. He is my pick for MVP.
Offensive Player of the Year
Alex Smith. When is the MVP not Offensive Player of the Year? This is his breakout season.
Defensive Player of the Year
Calais Campbell has 10 sacks and plays on the NFL’s best defense. JJ Watt is out for the season. I think that Campbell will walk away with the award.
Offensive Rookie of the Year
JuJu! This guy has taken over the NFL spotlight for two reasons: his 97-yard touchdown reception against Detroit, and his game of hide-and-seek after he scored against Cincinnati. Kareem Hunt makes it close, but JuJu Smith-Schuster will be Offensive Rookie of the Year. The Steelers offense has been disappointing. Their defense has carried them. Once they can start actually scoring some points, they will win Super Bowl 52.
Defensive Rookie of the Year
Tre’Davious White. He plays on another elite defense, as the Bills have a turnover margin of +11, the best in the league. White has caused two of those, intercepting a pass and forcing a fumble.
Coach of the Year
The Chiefs have had such a turnaround season. Alex Smith has been incredible, and I give all of the credit to Andy Reid. The Chiefs will probably lose to the Steelers in the AFC Championship game, but they’ve had a heck of a season so far.
Players can only take a team so far. For the Super Bowl, I predict the Steelers to beat the Saints, 27-21. But a lot could happen in eight games. Also, the Giants and Browns will compete for the top draft pick. The 49ers will win at least one game. Kyle Shanahan finally has a real NFL quarterback. If nothing else, they should at least beat the Giants.
