February 4, 2018. 10:14 P.M. The greatest moment of Nick Foles’ life. Mine too. But what about Carson Wentz?
Let’s not forget about the guy who laid the foundation for the team to win it all. Wentz led the team to an 10-2 record before getting injured on December 10 in Los Angeles. Foles took over and held the lead that Wentz had built, effectively beating the Rams. However, Foles was not confided in by Eagles fans around the nation. One Eagles fan I knew suggested that they should start Nate Sudfeld. Thankfully for him, Foles worked out okay.
Foles wasn’t your typical backup quarterback. In 2013, he took over for Michael Vick and led Philly to a 10-6 record, a time in which he was regarded as the best quarterback in the NFC. However, after being sent to the Rams, he resumed his role on the bench. After he once again fell into the hands of Philadelphia, he backed up the blossoming Wentz. Foles was criticized for his regular season play, including a close game against the 3-13 Giants and a game against Oakland in which he made many bad throws.
The poor play continued in Philadelphia’s divisional round game against Atlanta. His first throw was a dead duck that landed ten yards behind Torrey Smith. However, behind a strong defense, the Eagles beat the Falcons 15-10. Foles threw for 246 yards without any touchdowns or interceptions. The next game, against Minnesota in the NFC title game, was a different story. In a 38-7 win, Foles threw for 352 yards and 3 touchdowns.
- QB to the Bills for both first-round draft picks
- QB to Jacksonville for Calais Campbell
- QB to Arizona for David Johnson
No matter what Philly does, there seem to be no winners. Everybody wants playing time, and trading away anyone is highly disrespectful after the seasons they both had. If they stick with Wentz, his lack of playoff experience could hurt them should they make a run at a title. Of course, all of that is thrown out the window if the rest of the team performs at a subpar level, which is bad news for all parties involved. All of this will factor into the decision, and the Eagles’ front office will be under a lot of pressure come September.
