Baker Mayfield may not be the most coveted quarterback in the draft, but he has the potential to succeed in the NFL, because of his lack of dependence on his legs. He had a stellar college career with its share of controversy, but throughout his 4 years at Oklahoma, one thing stayed consistent: his playing ability.
High School
Mayfield played for two years at Lake Travis High School. His record was 25-2, and he won the 2011 4A State championship.
College
Baker started his career at Texas Tech before transferring to Oklahoma. As a result of this, he was forced to sit out the 2014 season, in which the Sooners lost the Russell Athletic Bowl to Clemson. In his first year back, he led Oklahoma to an 11-1 record and a 4 seed in the 2015 College Football Playoff, where they would again face Clemson. But despite Mayfield’s 311 passing yards, Clemson won, 37-17.
The following year, the Sooners were expected to make it back to the Playoff. But losing two of their first 3 games sidetracked Oklahoma. However, the Sooners rebounded and won the remainder of their games, including the Sugar Bowl. He got arrested that offseason, and he is not the most well-liked guy. In Mayfield’s senior season, the Sooners again had high hopes. They finished the regular season 12-1 and were Big 12 Champions, as Mayfield won the Heisman. They would face Georgia in the Rose Bowl semifinal in the College Football Playoff. But, in the highest scoring Rose Bowl ever, Oklahoma lost in double overtime.
Mayfield never won a national title, but he was one of the best quarterbacks in Oklahoma history, and he is sure to find a happy home with an NFL team this season.
